Choose the right assessment

Which PSAT is right for the student?

The three PSAT assessments test similar Reading and Writing and Math skills, but they serve different grade levels and use different score ranges.

PSAT 8/9

Typical level: Grades 8-9

Score range: 240-1440

Build an early SAT Suite baseline and identify skills to strengthen before upper secondary school.

PSAT 10

Typical level: Grade 10

Score range: 320-1520

Measure college readiness and practise the digital skills and question styles used across the SAT Suite.

PSAT/NMSQT

Typical level: Grades 10-11

Score range: 320-1520

The qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program; separate eligibility rules apply.

Your school determines which test it offers. Scholarship eligibility is not automatic, especially for students outside the United States.

UAE school calendars

Fit PSAT preparation around the student’s curriculum.

American curriculum

Use the PSAT as a direct SAT Suite baseline. Protect school assessment weeks and schedule the first Bluebook mock early.

IB curriculum

Avoid heavy Internal Assessment and exam periods. Use shorter weekday sessions plus one weekend timed set.

British curriculum

Plan around GCSE, AS or A-level mocks. Separate PSAT pacing work from subject-exam revision blocks.

CBSE curriculum

Use algebra strengths efficiently while scheduling English conventions and evidence practice consistently around school tests.

Digital PSAT format

What to expect on test day.

2 hours 14 minutes

Total testing time, excluding the break and check-in.

98 questions

54 Reading and Writing questions plus 44 Math questions.

Two adaptive sections

Each section has two modules; performance in the first helps determine the second.

Bluebook delivery

The assessment is taken digitally with approved built-in testing tools.

Reading and Writing: 64 minutes

  • Information and Ideas
  • Craft and Structure
  • Expression of Ideas
  • Standard English Conventions

Math: 70 minutes

  • Algebra
  • Advanced Math
  • Problem-Solving and Data Analysis
  • Geometry and Trigonometry
  • Calculator and digital-tool strategy

Format and score information is based on current College Board guidance.

Diagnostic-first planning

Start with evidence, not a generic study schedule.

An initial review maps the student’s Reading and Writing, Math, timing and accuracy gaps. We then match the plan to the correct PSAT level, school workload and expected testing window.

Reading: Words in Context

The report’s praise was qualified: the process saved time, but only during low-demand periods.

What does qualified most nearly mean?

Answer: Limited. The clause after the colon restricts the praise. The common trap is choosing the job-related meaning “certified.”
Writing: Sentence Boundaries

The workshop finished ___ students collected their materials.

Choose: comma, semicolon, or no punctuation.

Answer: Semicolon. Both sides are independent clauses. A comma alone creates a comma splice.
Math: Linear Systems

Student tickets cost AED 20 and adult tickets AED 35. Thirty tickets produce AED 750. How many adult tickets were sold?

Answer: 10. Let a be adult tickets: 35a + 20(30-a) = 750. Therefore 15a = 150.
Math: Similarity

Two similar triangles have linear scale factor 3. The smaller area is 8. Find the larger area.

Answer: 72. Area scales by the square of the linear factor: 8 × 3² = 72.

Preparation and registration are separate.

PSAT assessments are administered by schools, not booked like a weekend SAT. College Board advises international students to contact a participating local school at least six weeks before the testing window.

PSAT FAQ

Questions Dubai families ask before starting PSAT prep.

What is the PSAT?

The PSAT is a digital College Board assessment in the SAT Suite. PSAT 8/9, PSAT 10 and PSAT/NMSQT measure Reading and Writing and Math skills at different grade levels.

Which PSAT should my child prepare for?

PSAT 8/9 is designed for grades 8 and 9, PSAT 10 for grade 10, and PSAT/NMSQT is usually taken in grades 10 or 11. The school determines which assessment it offers.

How long is the digital PSAT?

The digital PSAT takes 2 hours and 14 minutes and contains 98 questions: 54 Reading and Writing questions in 64 minutes and 44 Math questions in 70 minutes.

How can a student take the PSAT in Dubai?

PSAT assessments are administered by schools. College Board advises international students to contact a local participating school at least six weeks before the testing window. Anannt provides preparation, not test registration.

Does PSAT/NMSQT qualify every Dubai student for National Merit Scholarships?

No. PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying test, but National Merit Scholarship eligibility has additional requirements. International students should verify their eligibility directly with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

What are the PSAT score ranges?

PSAT 8/9 total scores range from 240 to 1440. PSAT 10 and PSAT/NMSQT total scores range from 320 to 1520.

Does Anannt offer online PSAT preparation?

Yes. Anannt offers PSAT preparation through in-person, online and hybrid formats for students in Dubai and elsewhere.

How long should a student prepare for the PSAT?

A focused 8 to 12 week plan works for many students, but the right timeline depends on grade, starting score, school workload, test date and target.
